The celebrity nutritionist Gabriela Peacock has already looked inside the fridges of Dame Joan Collins and the fashion designer Amanda Wakeley as part of HELLO!'s Don't Judge Me series, revealing the healthy foods and indulgent treats that keep the stars fuelled.
Now, Gabriela meets Kelly Hoppen, gaining an insight into how the interior designer and entrepreneur lives during weekends at her country home in the Cotswolds – and, needless to say, the decor is impeccable.
Gabriela's eye is first drawn to the cans of Dash flavoured water in Kelly's fridge. "They're fantastic. It really increases hydration if you flavour your water, as drinking water can be quite boring," she says, before pointing out the bottles of rosé on the shelves below. "Quite a bit of wine, which is fine when you hydrate."
Kelly, 66, who counts the Beckhams and Boy George among her clients, is based primarily in west London, so she likes to prepare food before her country weekends.
"I've baked my chicken burgers, and I've got mushrooms that I'll probably do on some seed toast for breakfast tomorrow," she says, taking bags of neatly chopped vegetables out of the freezer. "I always prep everything because I love cooking, but I hate preparing."
There's one ingredient that her partner, the retired businessman John Gardiner, isn't quite sold on. "John absolutely detests kale, so I have to steam it and put oil and lots of salt in a pan and fry it. Then he doesn't realise it's kale," she says.
Kelly's kitchen counter holds Kilner jars containing oats to make gluten-free muesli, plus seeds to add to salads. Gabriela suggests adding seeds and nuts to her weekend porridge, too.
"Your oats are carbohydrate, but they have high levels of fibre, and if you’re adding nuts, you're increasing the protein content and having a supercharged breakfast,” she says.
Kelly also has a stash of dark chocolate and loves a £2.50 M&S Walnut Whip, but her disciplined approach to fitness – she gets up at 6 am five days a week to work out with her trainer of 18 years – keeps things in balance.
"I get out of bed, have my hot water and lemon, go straight to coffee and then train. It's a mixture of weights and Pilates," Kelly says, adding that working out "is the one non-negotiable thing for me”.
She maintains her workout schedule while travelling, and during trips to Asia, she sticks to steamed fish, rice and vegetables. That said, on a forthcoming trip to New York, she will allow herself to indulge.
Travel influences Kelly’s design work, with the architecture of the Big Apple and the Italian island of Capri among her biggest inspirations.
As for dream clients, she’d love to design Beyoncé's home. "If somebody is a big personality, designing for them is always more of a challenge," she says. "I'm a typical Leo, so bring me a challenge and you'll get the best out of me."
And when it comes to go-to restaurants, London's River Cafe is top of her list. "Their grilled squid with rocket and chilli is the best, and the lemon polenta cake… I could eat a whole one," she says.
